The most hype you see on social media nowadays is “Sugar Detox.” Weight loss enthusiasts are more stressed about it. You may reduce 6-9 kilograms in a month by reducing your sugar intake.

What is a sugar detox?

It is nothing but reducing or completely stopping sugar intake from your daily food for a certain time period. It may be a few days to a week.

To carry out normal body function we need sugar. Complete sugar detox is not recommended scientifically. You can avoid extra sugar added to your food or can avoid sweets or sugary drinks. But you need to consume the natural sugar available in fruits.

Sugar requirement of the body

Normal adult women require 100 calories or 24 grams of sugar daily. And normal adult men require 150 calories or 36 grams of daily sugar intake.

  • Once you start restricting sugar intake, ultimately you are keeping yourself safe from diseases like obesity, Diabetes and certain cardiac diseases. 
  • Sugary foods are always high in calories and low in nutrients. If you avoid sugar intake, your calorie intake reduces and it helps in weight loss. 
  • Your blood sugar levels remain in control once you start avoiding excessive sugar intake. It can reduce the chances of high sugar crises, and fatigue and controls your hunger.
  • Once you start reducing your sugar intake, of course, there will be a cut down on fast food. And you have more choices for nutrient-dense foods.

  • While attempting sugar detox you need to decide for how many days you want to do this. Keep a clear idea of it. 
  • Remember, don’t go for more than two weeks for detox. 
  • Keep ready your meal plan for all these days.
  • Learn about different types of sugar. As food packaging mentioned it is not only a sugar, it may be written glucose, corn syrup, fructose or sucrose.
  • Avoid food that contains high sugar like cakes, pastries, juices, cold drinks, cookies and many sauces.
  • Include more fruits, vegetables and dry fruits in your daily diet.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Don’t avoid symptoms like giddiness or dizzy feelings. 


A sugar detox can help you in reducing weight. But it is always better to consult experts. Before going for detox take advice from your physician or dietitian.
